How to Live the Golden Rule for Greater Returns in Life

Golden Rule

What is the Golden Rule?

Let me start with this story from Harry Hiker who has done and excellent job explaining this in detail.

There once was a grandpa who lived with his family. As Grandpa grew older, he began to slobber and spill his food. So the family had him eat alone.

When he dropped his bowl and broke it, they scolded him and got him a cheap wooden bowl. Grandpa was so unhappy.

Now one day the young grandson was working with wood. "What are you doing?" Mom and Dad asked. "I'm making a wooden bowl," he said, "for when you two get old and must eat alone."

Mom and Dad then looked sad and realized how they were mistreating Grandpa. So they decided to keep quiet when he spills his food and to let him eat with the family.

First encounter with Golden Rule

My first encounter with the golden rule came the King James Version of the Holy Bible. In Mathew 7:12 as Jesus is teaching he makes this statement:

Mat 7:12  Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

The word "therefore" means because of something I just said.  Jesus is giving the rule after and example that he just gave:

"Matt 7:9-11 what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

The English Standard Version (ESV) reads...

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them,..."

The Golden Rule Application

This rule that comes from a spiritual book, from my understanding, can be applied to many things in life.

The thought process is directed to the individual doing the giving in the first place. You!

This brings to mind the universal law: "As you sow so shall you reap."

Going back to the story from the beginning... if you want to eat out of wooden bowls later in life... I think you get the picture.

Now, apply this to every thing you do in life. How...

  • you treat your mate...
  • how you treat your friends...
  • how do you treat your co-workers, employees and those under your supervision
  • etc...etc...
Golden Rule thought process

Start right now where you are with what you have and ask the question...

"What am I thinking right now about ___x___?"

"How would I want this person to treat me if I were in that position?"

What do I want to reap when the boomerang comes back?

Now apply that thought process to the situation at hand.

Remember as you would have others do to you, do it to them regardless of how they act.
