The Powerful “What” Will Take You To The Next Level

"What" will take you to the next level when you understand why.

I am sitting in a booth at Chili's, looking at a beautiful woman talking for what seemed to be a few minutes but had been two and half hours.

I was pouring most of my heart out to her and seemed to be getting nowhere.

So slightly frustrated, I blurted out, "why can't I put words on the paper"! "Why don't I feel like I know this stuff!" Why blah, blah, blah.

She stopped me in my emotional moment and said, that's the problem right there! I looked into those emerald green eyes, and her lips said, you are asking the wrong question.

What she said in the next thirty minutes carried me through several eye-opening, tear-fighting, thought-provoking moments that were so good I have to share them with you.

Why "Why" is the wrong question to ask

Here is what is wrong with asking why I can't do something.
Why do I feel this way? Why do I act this way?

In the world of personal development, that is striving to make the internal person match the growth of the external person. You are always supposed to be looking forward and moving forward.

Pay attention now.

When you ask, "why do I..." you move in the wrong direction of the mindset. You are no longer moving forward but backward in time.

Backward to dig for something you may never find, and you are stuck looking in the rearview mirror.

The painted picture for me to understand, and you need a picture in your subconscious to make it stick looks like this.

Why sends your mind back into this colossal filing cabinet that you have been stuffing and saving stuff in for as many years you have been living.

Your subconscious now has to open every drawer. Dig through every file, and all the cobb webs to maybe, maybe find a "why."

And now you really can't move forward. Because your subconscious said this is what you focused on, and I have to find the answer to keep you alive. So stop what you are doing, and I will find it.

It is like a dog searching for a buried bone. The dog does not know where it is, but it will dig and dig and dig to find it. He will rip up the earth and get nothing else done.

That is why asking why is the wrong question when looking for answers to move successfully ahead.

What is the right question to ask? I am glad you asked. Because the right question of "What" will take you to the next level.

"What" is the right question to ask

She is looking at me with a long pause like I am supposed to say, ok, what is the right question? But I know it was written on my face, so she continued.

What is the right question, she said. You ask, what I can do to move ahead, to get over this hurdle, this wall, this sticking point?

What will take you to the next level when you ask.

"What" will take you to the next level

You now use the most potent part of your mind, of your being, to reach out into the universe, into the enormous, never-ending filing cabinet of all the wisdom to find solutions.

What can I do to solve this challenge? When you put that question forward, start listening, start being aware of your surroundings. Get in tune with your intuition.

Carry a notepad, iPad, some recording devices to take down any thought that pops into your mind. Because your subconscious is digging and digging, not for buried bones but buried treasure, for answers to whatever you have focused on. Be ready to capture the solution.

There is a Chinese proverb that says, The dullest pencil is better than the sharpest mind. In case you didn't get that, Write it down

Trust your subconscious. It brought you this far. Tell it WHAT to think about and WHAT to do. When it brings you the new toy and says, I found it, listen, take action, and it will do it again and again.

What now?

She slapped me! Can you believe that?

Ok, not really, but I thought about the old Kungfu TV program when grasshopper would learn something his master would lightly smack his face. What did you do that for, said grasshopper.
To help you remember the lesson, said the master.

So, she teaches me these things and then pays for my lunch, ouch!

You are so mean, I said. Then, another lesson. Whatever you put out will always come back to you. Talk about laying the laws down to me.

So I left with this and the following, from her great wisdom.

Get an accountability partner to help you realize how many times in a day you ask why. Stand outside yourself and take a self-audit of how many times you ask why when examining you.

When you hear why in the wrong context, change it to what. What is the solution? This powerful "what" can and will take you to the next level in your life.

"Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you've got." - Jim Rohn

Now that you understand the importance of looking forward with the right questions there is also a need to take some action.  Because what you are trying to accomplish is a Mindset Shift.
