What does Success look like? – Part 2 Understanding

Understanding

Without Understanding our life and business can be like Chris demonstrates In the movie “Rush Hour”.  An american was speaking to a foreigner and he thought the foreigner did not understand him, said … “do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?”

I want to continue with the subject of … “What are some of the traits of a success personality.”

If you would like to read part 1 click here

This subject today is one the everybody needs and can constantly improve on.

UNDERSTANDING

Understanding comes with good communication.

Let me point out that miscommunication is the reason for many failures,  which is why we must become good communicators if we want to be effective in our work, social life and with our self.

This is taught by all the great teachers in different forms or phrases —  from —

“Let him who has ears to hear — HEAR”

all the way to, “ shut-up and listen to me!”  Which we may hear a lot if we do not have this skill.

The very first thing we must put in our head is …

Others do not see things the way that we do.

Imagine that!   Now the question is  — why?

Pick up a English dictionary and turn to a word and you will most of the time see  – 6 – 7 – 10- sometimes even 15 definitions for one word. And it depends on which one you are familiar with as to how you might use it.

Let me give you an example – I have a friend who lives in New Jersey and I am from Georgia — I made a comment on a Facebook post about this is the way to progress with our coach.  My friend replied – “I'm down with that” —

Well, I  thought he did not like the idea – so I made a comment trying to defend what I thought was a good Idea because down with that to me meant “Put that down!”— and the whole time he was in agreement with me.

So, because we use the word differently there was the lack of understanding. (on my part of course)

So there are two reasons understanding is needed – the different definitions of the word and the background (environment)  from where we live as to why we have communication challenges.

There is even some evidence that …

Gender (that is male and female) causes miscommunication's.

And I have to be careful here so I don't create one of those misunderstandings. Let me put a thought in front of us from Dr Maxwell Maltz …

“We expect other people to react and respond and come to the same conclusions

as we do from a given set of facts or circumstances.

But — People react to their own mental images, not to things as they are.”

are you trying to impress her?

Let me try this from two sides –

Her

A husband and wife are downtown and are about to go into a department store.  At the same time another beautiful lady is coming to the door to get out and the husband quickly steps up and opens the door for her.   Does the wife then think-

“you were trying to impress her!  You never open the door for me like that!”  —

My answer – it depends.

She doesn't think I can do thisOn the other side –

Him

Husband and wife are going some where new and the husband is driving.  They are in the general area of where  they are going but they are lost.  They pull into a convenience store to get gas and the wife goes to pay for it.  While she is in there she ask the clerk for directions.

when she comes back and tell the husband what the man said inside – does the husband then think …

“she doesn't trust me to get us where we are going — she has no respect for my ability”

My answer — it depends.

How do we fix this?

Now you are saying – Baxter you are taking the safe way out!  and you would be correct. But, here is what we have to do to let this be part of our success personality …

We have to give others credit for being sincere, even if they are mistaken.

Do not think the worst  — that they did it deliberately with malicious intent.

Think — they were trying to do what they believe is right.

This thought process can do a lot to smooth out human relations and bring about better understanding between people.

Ask yourself,

“How does this appear to him or her?”

“How does she or he interpret this situation?”

“How does he or she feel about it?”

As the song (Magic Man by Heart – ) says  — “Try, Try, Try to understand”  why he or she might act the way they do.

Because communication is a two way street and we need to be able to drive on both sides.

We must also

Apply this to Our Self

Understanding yourself  means knowing your weaknesses and your strengths.

It means knowing what you can do well and what you need to pass off to or delegate to others – called outsourcing.

A top corporate CEO once said,

“I've become somewhat famous thanks to several very notable astute decisions. But I've made a number of incredibly bad ones too. I am neither my best or my worst decision. I am a successful, capable executive who makes his fair share of blunders, and that's all there is to it.”

Understanding you self  helps you to not be down on your self.  Just like understanding others so that we do not look down on them and say how sorry they are, or whatever we might say, realize you are going to make mistakes also.

In fact, understanding your self says — “I have to make mistakes to learn and to “fail forward”.

Did you understand that?   You must make mistakes! or you will not move forward in growth.

Enough said for today

How do I apply this to my business?  What is the practical application of understanding to be successful?

When you work with people it is understanding what they can and can not do.  Do not try to force a square peg in a round hole.

When you work with your self it is that same thing. What are your strengths? Then improve on those.

What are your weaknesses? Then out source when possible.

This is not an over night miracle – It helps to understand this too.

Systems

Next you must have an understanding of systems.  I don't mean your copying machine system or your coffee machine system. I am talking about systems that is your business in your marketing.

Let me briefly explain.  Franchises are the top (that is #1) money producing business model.  McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, ServPro, look them up on the top 500 Franchises.  And here is why they have a system in place that works WHEN you follow the system.

You can take a hormone enraged, totally distracted teenager and put them in the line, show them how to flip the hamburger and put on a piece of bread and you can make a million a year.  Because of a system.

Affiliate Marketing is the next best business model to have because it is and has a system that some other person built and you get to leverage it.

When you understand this you can save a lot of time, money, and headache.  When you apply this you move ahead much faster than when you create your own.  Look at such a system here.

Understanding these three things, people, yourself, and systems you can leverage,  can help move you ahead faster than ever before.

So go check this out research it, and you will see the facts, but don't take to long because everyday your store is closed – you are losing money.

If you are looking to have a retirement having a system is the best way to continue having an income that does not take much to have a continuous flow of income.
